The Great San Francisco Pottery Pit Fire.

it firing is one of the oldest ways of firing pottery. A group of potters and sculptures from the San Francisco Bay Area recently got together on a cold , Summer, windy, Summer, San Francisco beach to fire their pots and sculptures.

The process started many months ago with the creation of their original works. Since there are no glazes used, each piece is hand burnish, to add gloss, and bisque fired (low tempter firing) prior to the pit fire day.

Time to unload and get everything down to the beach...................

As some of the people bring, toss, drag all the makings down to the beach, others are beginning to dig the pit…….

It doesn't take long for the pit to take shape with 10 or 15 people working in shifts……….
